I can help you with some of this stuff. If you haven't already done so, make sure that Google is indexing your site. If you do this you increase the chances it will pop up in the search results if someone is doing a lap-band search.
Facebook and Twitter are very easy and many of us are already on there, so you can get many followers very easily.
Facebook is a compilation of things- a place to share photos, play games, chat with others and the like. It is very different from a blog which is, in essence, an online diary or journal of sorts.
Twitter is for "sound bites" like what you described above- motivational, funny or meaningful messages that are all 140 characters or less.
If you'd rather chat by phone, send me an email and I'll give you my #. kagead25@gmail.com

Oh, one other thing I recommend to EVERYONE- set up a dedicated GMail account to use with Facebook and Twitter and any other social networking you may do. You can create something like thesweetspot@gmail.com or bandgroupie@gmail.com and you will know that every single piece of mail you get to that account will be from a social networking site.
Add me! www.phoenixrevolution.net and I'll join you as a follower.
Some ideas that have helped me out (not that I'm a blogging expert! I'm still learning!) is to: (1) post on Ezine articles and (2) Post on Blog to Lose and (3) live feed every facebook post on your facebook account and (4) email your followers periodically when you have a really good posting and (5) guest blog on other blogs and websites.
Other things: Have you set up a Google Analytics widget yet? Your publisher will be interested in to know data that Google Analytics can provide.
Hope that helps!
Christine

You might want to check out BlogHer. It is a group of women bloggers of all different topics that get together to help with their blogging, etc. I don't know the specifics of it, but if you google it, you'll find it.
Also, the web tracker that I use, SiteMeter, will keep track of things for lots longer than a week, even longer if you pay for it (I use the free service). It might be worth it. You can go to the bottom of my block, click on it, and it will take you to the site.
Oh, and if you want to force people to have to click on through to your blog to read the entire thing rather than reading the entire post through Google Reader (or other similar blog readers), you can change your settings to have just a preview available through the readers. That will up the count on blog and page visits. But beware that this may cause some people not to click through, due to the inconvenience of it.
But I really do think that BlogHer is your best bet for learning how to get your blog out there.
Here is a link to a post from a gal who has very heavy traffic.

Good luck!
We are kindred electronic spirits! I'm also puzzeled by it all. I keep getting invites from my readers for facebook and twitter. I have accounts with both, but just CAN'T seem to make it work! Good luck
